Europe win dramatic Solheim Cup against USA with the very last putt on 18th hole

After three days of intense competition between Europe and USA in Gleneagles, Scotland, it all came down to the last two putts on the last hole in the Women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup.

If Marina Alex holed her 10-foot putt, then USA would retain the Solheim Cup they won two years ago in Iowa. However, she narrowly missed.

Up then stepped Norwegian’s Suzann Pettersen to sink an 8-foot putt to win the hole with a birdie along with her match to win the precious point to secure a 14.5 – 13.5 point victory for the Europeans.

Pettersen was a surprise last-minute wild-card pick having only resumed professional golf earlier this year after taking a break during 2018 to have a child. Ranked number 655 in the world, the 38-year old repaid the faith given to her by Scottish Captain Catriona Matthew. Moments after winning the most crucial match of her 9 Solheim Cups, Pettersen announced her retirement from professional golf. “This is it. I’m completely done.”

Team Captain Catriona Matthew said after the match:
“A fantastic moment, a dream come true. The 12 of these players played their hearts out. A fantastic team performance.”
