City sign Rodri after triggering release clause

Manchester City have announced the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri after activating the release clause in his contract.

Rodri, capped six times for his national side Spain, signs a five-year-deal with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Speaking on his move, the Spaniard explained:

“What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad. It’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times.

“It’s a style that excites me, as do the Club’s ambitions.

“I can’t wait to start working with Pep Guardiola and my new team-mates and hopefully we can achieve great things together.”

The 23-year-old is one of the brightest young midfield talents in world football and is seen by many as the long term successor to Fernandinho.

He started his youth career at Atleti before moving to Villereal as a youngster. After impressing at the Yellow Submarine, Rodri returned to the Wanda Metropolitano where he has enhanced his reputation further to prompt City to pay his release clause believed to be around £62 million.

The Spaniard becomes City’s second signing of the summer after announcing the return of defender Angelino from PSV Eindhoven yesterday.
