Germany will be without a key player for at least their final two group stage matches after midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan broke her toe in their opening Group B game against China on Saturday.

This injury could mean that the 27-year-old may miss the rest of the Women’s World Cup despite being able to play the full 90 minutes in Die Nationalelf’s 1-0 win over China.

It is hoped that the midfielder will be fit after being assessed following the Germans final two group stage games.

Firstly Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side will face Spain in their second match on Wednesday, Spain coming into the fixture off the back of beating South Africa 3-1. While Die Nationalelf meet South Africa in their final game of this year’s group stage, which will be on Monday 17th June.

Head Coach Voss-Tecklenburg gave the most up-to-date news on the star:

“We’ll try to get her back… but I cannot give a precise prognosis. You cannot replace her because she has special qualities and abilities.”

One factor determining whether the midfielder will be back after the group stage games is which toe she has broken as a worst-case scenario would see it take up to three weeks to repair, meaning she would play no further part in this year’s Women’s World Cup.

Die Nationalelf player Marozsan, has had to fight back from injury before, after missing three months of last year’s qualification process as the midfielder was unable to play due to suffering a pulmonary embolism.

Despite this, the 27-year-old has still been capped 91 times since making her debut back in 2010, even though there had been fears that she may never play again.

Marozsan helped club side Olympique Lyonnais to a record-extending 13th consecutive league title while being named the French League’s best player for the third consecutive season. The midfielder also helped herself to a fourth straight Champions League title with the French side.
