Union achieved promotion in after a goalless first-leg and yesterday’s 2-2 draw sent the second-tier side up into the Bundesliga on away goals.
Stuttgart had to feature in these play-offs after finishing 16th in the Bundesliga this season and after this defeat, the Reds will be relegated to Bundesliga 2 for next season.
Union will be the fifth team from the German capital to play in the top division since the creation of the championship in 1963. They are the first team to beat a Bundesliga side in the play-offs since 2012, while it is a second relegation in four seasons for Stuttgart.
Union Berlin will join FC Koln and Paderborn in the top-flight, who were promoted automatically as winners and runners-up respectively.
Stuttgart join Hannover 96 and Nurnberg as the three teams relegated to the second-tier of German football.
