England leave out Trippier, Winks, Ward-Prowse and Redmond for Nations League

Gareth Southgate has trimmed his England squad to 23 players, leaving out Kieran Trippier, Harry Winks, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond for this summer’s UEFA Nations League.

England initially named a preliminary 27-man squad ahead of preparations for the Nations League, where they play the Netherlands in the semi-finals on June 6.

Tottenham duo of Trippier and Winks have been left out by Gareth Southgate due to form and injury concerns. Despite being an integral figure for the 2018 World Cup, Trippier has found it hard to translate that form for Spurs this season, struggling for consistency.

The emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold and the continuing competition from his former Spurs team-mate Kyle Walker has meant the full back now finds himself down the pecking order for the right-back berth.

Meanwhile, Harry Winks is still working his way back to full fitness having been out with a groin injury since early April and could be deemed as a risk to prolong his season by playing in the tournament.

Southampton pair James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond could count themselves unlucky to be cut from squad following an extremely bright end to the campaign under Saints boss, Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Captain Harry Kane retains his place in the squad despite not playing since April 9 due to ankle injury sustained against Manchester City.

England’s 23-man squad for Nations League finals:

Goalkeepers:

Jack Butland (Stoke), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Defenders:

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ben Chilwell (Leicester), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Michael Keane (Everton), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Danny Rose (Tottenham), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Midfielders:

Ross Barkley (Chelsea), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Declan Rice (West Ham)
