Bundesliga Matchday 34: The one where Bayern was crowned champions

Bayern reigns for another year, BVB comes close and more in the 34th match day of the Bundesliga.

Bayern faced the end of the season at home with the possibility of lifting the title for the first time in front of their own fans and they didn’t disappoint. Eintracht Frankfurt was unable to hold them back in a 5-1 match.

Bayern was off to a strong start in the first half as a 1-0 lead was courtesy of Kingsley Coman. Sebastien Haller, for a brief moment, leveled things in the 50th minute, but a quick response from David Alaba was a sign of the floodgates opening as Renato Sanches, Franck Ribery, and Arjen Robben all scored to give the home fans a victory to savor and for the elder statesmen of the club the proper sendoff that they could have wanted.

Borussia Dortmund knew they needed victory over Borussia Monchengladbach to win the title, with help. They did their part to get there in a convincing 2-0 victory over the Foals.

Goals on either side of halftime by Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus meant that for the neutral observer the title was going to be decided by the result in Munich. For BVB, this was a very convincing victory to end the season and a promise that in 2019-20 they would be pushing for the victory in the Bundesliga, Pokal and Champions League.

Bayer Leverkusen knew that if they had results go their way, they would find themselves in fourth place and the Champions League. For their big match vs Hertha, they didn’t disappoint with a 5-1 victory.

Peter Bosz’s turn around has been considerable when you think of where the club was when they made the mid-season change. A hat trick by Lucas Alario with goals from Kai Havertz and Julian Brandt was the firepower that with the injection of cash from UEFA for group stage participation will have the club performing at the highest end next season.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

Wolfsburg looked to wrap up qualification to the UEFA Europa League next campaign and did so in style as they destroyed Augsburg 8-1 in the highest goal scoring tally of the season.

Werder Bremen took their challenge for the UEFA Europa League seriously as they disrupted the preparation of RB Leipzig in the lead up to next weekend’s DFB Pokal with a 2-1 win.

Hoffenheim went from UEFA Europa League qualified to eliminated in mere moments vs Mainz as they conceded three goals in the final seven minutes to go from seventh and cruising with a 2-0 halftime lead to 4-2 losers allowing Eintracht to enter the Europa League through the back door.

SC Freiburg consigned FC Nurnberg to 18th by blitzing Der Club 5-1, despite already being relegated, for a very comprehensive victory.

In a match of two of the pre-season relegation favorites, Fortuna Dusseldorf delighted their fans with a 2-1 victory over Hannover that will lend hope that their survival can be more than a one-year stay.

Schalke played with Stuttgart to a forgettable 0-0 draw. The Swabian’s looked on the next day to find that Union Berlin will contest them for the relegation playoff in a couple days time.
