Olivier Giroud signs a new one year contract extension with Chelsea

French World Cup winner Olivier Giroud has agreed a new one-year contract extension.

The striker was able to talk to other clubs outside of England due to his contract being set to run out in June, however he opted against this and has extended his stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2019-20 season.

Giroud spoke about his delight on staying with the Blues to the club’s media team:

“I am very happy to sign a new contract. I really wanted to stay at least one more year.

I have felt a part of the team, the family, since the beginning and hopefully there will be more trophies to come.”

Since leaving Arsenal in January 2018, the 32-year-old has scored 17 times in 62 matches for the Premier League side. This has included him becoming the first Chelsea player ever to reach double figures for goals in a single season of European football.

This is after scoring 10 goals in 13 matches this campaign as the forward has led the Blues to a Europa League final against his former team Arsenal.

Marina Granovskaia, the club’s director spoke highly about the attacker:

“We are very pleased that Olivier will be a Chelsea player for another season. Since joining us 18 months ago, he has at times had to be patient and wait for opportunities, but has still been able to make a positive contribution to the team.”

Chelsea finished 3rd in the Premier League, which has ensured that the club will be playing Champions League football. He’s also won a trophy since joining winning the FA Cup last season as the Blues beat Manchester United 1-0 to be crowned winners.

It’s expected that Giroud will play a part in their final match of the season when they travel to Azerbaijan, Baku for the Europa League final in eight days time.
