Vivianne Miedema wins PFA Player of the Year with Georgia Stanway collecting PFA Young Player of the Year

Arsenal Women forward Vivianne Miedema won the PFA Player of the Year Award for the 2018-19 season while Manchester City Women forward Georgia Stanway won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton was also recognised as she received the PFA Merit Award.

Miedema’s award came just hours after she opened the scoring for Arsenal as they beat Brighton 4-0 to win the Women’s Super League title. The Dutch international beat Houghton, Nikita Parris, Keira Walsh, Erin Cuthbert and Ji So-yun.

She is the top scorer in the WSL this season with 22 goals and 11 assists and has been vital to Arsenal this season. Amid all the injuries, she has been a consistent performer and her efforts have been recognised by her fellow professionals.

Miedema is the first Arsenal player to win the senior prize since team-mate Kim Little claimed the inaugural award in 2013.

After receiving the award, Miedema, 22, said:

“I’m obviously really proud to represent my team here, we’ve had an amazing year, especially with winning the league.

“I’m just really happy I could help my team all season long with scoring goals and it means a lot.”

Georgia Stanway beat Miedema, Man City team-mate Kiera Walsh, Alisha Lehmann, Cuthbert and Sophie Baggaley to win the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. The England international has been in fine form this season, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists at the age of 20.

Stanway’s Man City side will complete a domestic cup double if they can beat West Ham in the Women’s FA Cup final to add to their League Cup success.

Steph Houghton, a huge part of women’s football for over a decade with 104 England caps to her name, was given the Merit Award for her services to the game. Houghton has won every domestic trophy during her time at Man City and leads by example for both club and country.
