Former New York Knicks star Kristaps Porzingis allegedly raped a neighbour on the same night that he suffered a season-ending knee injury last year according to the New York Post.
The woman came forward with the allegation against the Latvian on Thursday. The New York Police Department are investigating the claims.
The alleged attack happened on February 8, 2018. It is also believed that the alleged victim was offered $68,000 (£52,000) in alleged ‘hush money’.
The New York Post reported that the alleged rape happened at around 2 a.m Eastern Time (6 a.m. GMT) after the 23-year-old NBA star invited the woman – who is in her 20s – over to his apartment.
Porzingis’ current team, the Dallas Mavericks, have been made aware of the woman’s accusation according to the New York Post.
An attorney for the Mavericks forward says Porzingis “unequivocally” denies the allegation.
Roland Riopelle, a lawyer representing the Latvian star, released a statement after the allegation broke. He said:
“We are aware of the complaint that was made against Mr. Porzingis on Friday and unequivocally deny the allegations.
“We made a formal referral to federal law enforcement on December 20, 2018, based on the accuser’s extortionate demands.
“We also alerted the National Basketball Association months ago and they are aware of the ongoing investigation of the accuser by federal law enforcement.
“We cannot comment further on an ongoing federal investigation.”
Police officials are also yet to make a comment on the allegation.
