Paul Scholes appointed Oldham Athletic manager

Oldham Athletic have appointed Paul Scholes as their successor to caretaker manager Pete Wild according to reports.

The League Two side will formally announce the Manchester United icon’s arrival on Monday subject to a successful investigation by The FA and the EFL.

The 44-year-old is under scrutiny as the football authorities decide whether he has a conflict of interests due to his ten percent stake in Vanarama National League side Salford City, whom are fighting for promotion to League Two.

Academy Coach Pete Wild has been in caretaker charge at Boundary Park since Frankie Bunn’s sacking on 27 December but when asked by Sky Sports whether a 3-0 victory at Crawley Town would be his last game in charge of Oldham Athletic, he said:

“I think so. But, as I’ve done through all these eight games, I’ve come in every morning, worked hard, tried my best and I’ll just plan for tomorrow.

“If tomorrow I’m in and doing my job then I’m doing my job and I have to keep working like that.

Reports by Sky Sports state that the only restriction Scholes would face is that he would not be allowed to buy players from, or sell to, Salford City.

Oldham moved up to 14th in League Two with a 3-0 win at Crawley on Saturday; however, it is unknown whether Scholes’ first game in charge will be Tuesday’s trip to Yeovil or the visit of Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.
