Liverpool’s Gomez set to undergo leg surgery

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set to undergo surgery on his lower leg after sustaining a fracture in his sides 3-1 away win over Burnley on December 5th.

Gomez had started the season in fine form, providing a solid partner to Virgil van Dijk as well as providing cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The former Charlton youngster had appeared in 21 games for club and country this season before suffering the injury and will no doubt want to be involved in England’s Nations League adventure this summer.

The news comes as a blow to Liverpool who are currently top of the table chasing their first ever Premier League crown. Jurgen Klopp shared his disappointment at the news when speaking to liverpoolfc.com.

“It’s a blow for the boy and for us – because prior to the injury he was in such fantastic shape.

“But he is too valuable to take any risk with, both for our present and future, so we get this procedure done and he comes back when he’s ready.

“His attitude during this rehab has been outstanding but it just hasn’t healed as we’d have liked so we will make this intervention and then he will come back.”

It is expected that Gomez will be able to feature again this season as the 21-year-old recovers for another long-term injury.

Liverpool face West Ham on Monday night as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table to five.
