Tottenham extend Alderweireld contract until 2020

Tottenham have announced today their intention to extend defender Toby Alderweireld’s contract by a further year to 2020.

A club statement read:

“The Club can confirm that we have activated the option to extend Toby Alderweireld’s contract until 2020. “The Belgium international defender has made 135 appearances for us to date since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015.”

“Capped 88 times by his country, Toby began his professional career with Eredivisie side Ajax before moving to Madrid in 2013. His first introduction to the Premier League came during a season-long loan at Southampton in 2014/15 prior to joining us.”

The former Southampton loanee has established himself as one of the elite Premier League defenders in recent years with Mauricio Pochettino’s side achieving three consecutive Champions League campaigns.

The extension of his current deal fails to end the transfer saga around the 29-year-old which swirled around this summer with a transfer release clause now activated due to this new extension.  The clause states that during the final two weeks of next summers transfer window Alderweireld is able to leave should someone meet a £25 million release clause.

There will undoubtedly be suitors for the Belgian with Manchester United keen on signing the defender last summer before being priced out of a deal.

Tottenham and Alderweireld’s next fixture comes on Friday as they travel to Tranmere in the third round of the FA Cup.
