A Tottenham Hotspur fan has been arrested and handed a lifetime ban for throwing a banana skin at Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during yesterday’s North London Derby.
What was already a heavily anticipated League fixture between the two sides saw tempers flare at numerous moments during the match as Spurs came from behind to lead before eventually losing 4-2 to their London rivals.
The original arrest was made for throwing a missile, however Metropolitan Police are investigating as to whether the incident was racially aggravated.
An investigation by The Football Association will also take place using CCTV footage as well as statements from representatives from both clubs today, although they are only responsible for sanctioning clubs not individuals.
Tottenham Hotspur have condemned the incident, a spokesperson stating to the BBC:
“Behaviour such as this is completely unacceptable and the supporter in question will be issued with a ban.”
Former Arsenal icon Ian Wright made 288 appearances for the Gunners but admitted that the abuse he suffered never breached the line into racial discrimination.
“I’ve played against Spurs and I’ve taken a lot of abuse but never ever has it been racial,” the former striker told Match of the Day 2.
“Now Spurs have to deal with this because some idiot has done that. It’s not only embarrassed Spurs but it has embarrassed the Premier League because it has gone around the world.
“It’s really unfortunate to see.”
Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot after Jan Vertonghen was sent off although Eric Dier equalised shortly afterwards. Dier celebrated his equaliser by putting a finger to his lips, leading to friction among the players and supporters as the goal was celebrated.
Harry Kane put the visitors ahead with a penalty of his own after Heung-Min Son was adjudged to have been tripped inside the area.
