Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hit out at the behaviour of Paris Saint-Germain players, accusing them of making his side “look like butchers”.
The Reds were beaten 2-1 in Paris on Wednesday evening in the Champions League, leaving their hopes of qualification to the knock-out stages hanging by a thread.
Liverpool’s frustrated manager hinted at PSG using the fouls to disrupt his side’s rhythm. Speaking at his post match press conference he said,
“The number of interruptions in the game was just not cool.”
The German took particular exception with Brazilian superstar Neymar who was at the heart of the incidents,
“It was clever of PSG, of Neymar, especially him.
“You act like you die and the next moment you get up again. You can give a yellow card. It’s not sportsmanlike behaviour.”
Klopp pleaded for officials to get a better control over players going to ground lightly. He said,
“I never expect help from a ref. I only expect for them to calm all these things down.”
Last year’s Champions League finalists saw six of their players yellow carded while committing 20 fouls, while the Parisians were booked just twice.
When quizzed about what officials could do to try and stamp out the behaviour, the German boss was reticent to give a response,
“I could say 500,000 things and none of them I will not read tomorrow in the newspaper.”
Liverpool head into their final game against Napoli with several permutations hanging over their quest to qualify.
Should The Reds defeat Carlo Ancelotti’s men 1-0 they would qualify. However, a 2-1 victory would see Klopp’s team crash out on the away goals rule.
Should Liverpool win by two clear goals then they would also go through.
