Benjamin Mendy is set for another torrid time on the sidelines. The Manchester City defender faces up to three months out after a cartilage problem in his left knee had to be operated on following his side’s 3-1 win in the Manchester Derby.
The full-back had surgery in Barcelona during the international break and manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the timeframe in a press conference on Friday morning saying, “he’ll be out for 10 to 12 weeks.”
The Frenchman joined from AS Monaco back in 2017 for around £57 million following a break out season in which the French side won the Ligue 1 title.
Mendy has previous with serious knee injuries as a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament ended his debut season in England in late September 2017.
The former Monaco man returned from a World Cup winning summer with France to feature 11 times this season at club level.
City will likely turn to Fabian Delph, who was reliable during Mendy’s absence last season. The 24-year-old missed almost the entirety of the 2017-18 season with a cruciate ligament rupture.
Delph slotted in 29 times for the Guardiola’s side which has since seen the versatile player get called back up into the England team.
Manchester City face West Ham tomorrow at 3 pm, where the home side will hope to spoil former manager Manuel Pellegrini’s day.
