In a tense quarterfinal match with Australia that took 120 minutes, plus 8 rounds of penalty kicks to decide, Brazil emerged the victor, moving on to the semifinals.
Still scoreless after overtime, it was Brazil’s fourth kick, by Marta, that was saved by Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams. With the chance to win it , Aussie Katrina Gorry stepped up to take her penalty, but Brazil’s keeper Barbara, knocked the shot away to keep her team alive.
Barbara came up with the save of the game on Australia’s third shot of sudden death penalties, stopping Alanna Kennedy’s shot and sealing the win for Brazil.
The match was quick and physical, with Australia having to go to its bench in the 20th minute after defender Stephanie Catley was injured and had to leave the match. Later, Brazil’s Fabiana was taken off the field on a stretcher, with an ankle injury.
Brazil looked to have the better of the offense, with Marta, Formiga, Debhina, and Andressa Alves all threatening, but Australia’s defense held up, anchored by big saves from Williams.
Despite taking 20 shots to Australia’s seven, Brazil was unable to find the back of the net.
Australia’s best scoring opportunities came from Chloe Logarzo, firing a long, hard shot in the 86th minute that hit the cross bar, and Caitlin Foord, who sent two shots wide in overtime.
Brazil will play Sweden in a semifinal match on Tuesday. Sweden defeated the US in their quarterfinal match, also by penalty kicks.
