England captain and key central defender Rio Ferdinand will miss the World Cup after suffering a knee injury in training.
The 31-year-old centre-back had a scan after a challenge with forward Emile Heskey during Friday’s first training session.
Ferdinand emerged from hospital in Rustenburg on crutches and Michael Dawson who has been put on standby, will fly to South Africa in the next 12 hours. Tottenham’s Dawson was marginally left out of England’s 23-man squad earlier in the week but is now set for a reprieve.
