Vancouver Whitecaps 4-1 San Diego FC

VANCOUVER, BC–Vancouver Whitecaps moved closed to the top seed in the Western Conference following a 4-1 thumping of San Diego FC. The win, coupled with losses by FC Dallas and St. Louis, give the Whitecaps a four-point lead at the top of the West with two matches to play. With the loss, San Diego is eliminated from playoff contention.

Aleksa Cvetkovic opened the scoring in the 24th minute after receiving a feed from Manuel Laborda. It’s Cvetkovic’s first goal as a Whitecap. Brian White doubled the lead in the 41st minute heading in a diagonal ball from Oliver Larraz.

Ryan Gauld made it 3-0 to the hosts in the 68th minute as he was left criminally unmarked in front of goal after receiving a pass from Rayan Elloumi. More poor defense by San Diego allowed the Whitecaps to score the fourth on a counter that turned into a 2-on-1 and Bruno Caicedo scoring.

Onni Valakari scored a consolation goal for San Diego, but they were second best on the night and are now winless in ten. Vancouver can clinch the top seed in the West on Sunday with a win over Seattle at BC Place. Kickoff is at 12:30pm PT on Apple TV.
