Revolution II Earn Extra Point in Penalty Shootout Victory Over Columbus Crew 2

Prior to the start of the second half, Columbus Crew 2 head coach Federico Higuaín made three substitutions, replacing Chase Adams, Moses Nyeman and O’Neal Taylor with Prince Forfor, Jamil Danjaji and Giorgio De Libera.

New England Revolution II opened the second half on the front foot, immediately applying pressure in Columbus’ defensive third.

Tristan Brown created the first opportunity of the half for Columbus in the 49th minute, but his left-footed shot was blocked and cleared by Damario McIntosh.

Two minutes later, Marcos Zambrano continued to threaten for New England, sending a left-footed effort narrowly wide of the left post.

Gabe Dahlin produced New England’s next opportunity in the 60th minute, but his two attempts from inside the penalty area were denied by the Columbus defense and goalkeeper Luke Pruter.

In the 64th minute, Revolution II head coach Pablo Moreira made his first three substitutions of the match, replacing Tylon Smith, Marcos Zambrano and Jared Smith with Chris Mbai-Assem, Jayden Da and Schinieder Mimy.

Four minutes later, Higuaín made Columbus’ fourth change, replacing Brown with Immanuel Ewing.

Mbai-Assem was shown a yellow card in the 72nd minute, while Revolution II goalkeeper Donovan Parisian was booked one minute later.

Makai Wells created New England’s next opportunity in the 76th minute, sending a right-footed shot from the center of the penalty area over the crossbar.

Columbus midfielder Nico Rincon was shown a yellow card in the 79th minute.

In the 84th minute, Moreira made his fourth change of the match, replacing Wells with Aarin Prajapati.

Columbus found the equalizer in the 89th minute.

Following a corner-kick delivery from Nico Rincon, 16-year-old Jamil Danjaji directed a header into the bottom-left corner to level the match at 1-1.

Rui Aoki nearly found a winner for Columbus in the second minute of stoppage time, but his header from inside the penalty area was saved by Donovan Parisian.

Less than a minute later, Gabe Dahlin produced a headed opportunity at the opposite end, but Aoki blocked the effort and cleared the danger.

After 90 minutes, the match remained level at 1-1, sending the two sides to a penalty shootout to determine the winner of the additional point.
