Uruguay’s World Cup is over following a 1-0 defeat against Spain in Guadalajara. They finished third in the group, but ended up one of four third place teams not advancing to the Round of 32 on just two points.
The game’s lone score came in the 42nd minute as Alex Baena’s shot was misplayed by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who would be substituted out at halftime. Uruguay could not find an equalizer which would have seen them through considering Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia drew 0-0 in the other Group H match.
However, it is a second successive group stage exit for Uruguay and a possible inquest is on the way for the two-time World Cup champions.
Spain, meanwhile, will face Austria in their Round of 32 matchup in Los Angelea on Thursday (noon PT, Fox/Telemundo).
