Seattle Seawolves 36=28 New England Free Jacks
TUKWILA, WA–Seattle clinched a playoff spot with a 36-28 win over the three-time defending champion New England Free Jacks at StarFire Sports Complex. The win moves them into third and nine points clear of fourth with one match to play–clinching a spot in the semifinals and avoiding Chicago in those semifinals.
After a 7-7 first half, the Seawolves got back-to-back tries via a penalty try and then a second try from Paddy Ryan that was converted by Davy Coetzer. After New England got a second try, Seattle got 12 more unanswered points through Dewald Kotze and Divan Roussow to make it 33-14.
The Free Jacks were not going away, though. They would get two more converted tries through Sione Tupou and Alex MacKenzie to cut the deficit to five with three minutes to play, but Seattle would add a penalty goal late to put the match out of reach and clinch a playoff spot.
Both teams conclude their regular season on Sunday. New England are in a must-win at home against undefeated Chicago (2pm ET, ESPN+), while Seattle will host California (6pm PT, ESPN+) to determine who is home in next week’s semifinal.
