Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 Colorado Rapids

VANCOUVER, BC–Playing their last home game at BC Place until August 1st, the Vancouver Whitecaps kept pace with San Jose after defeating Colorado Rapids, 3-1, before a crowd of 27,589–their 19th successive home crowd over 20,000 for league matches. The Caps keep within three points of San Jose for top spot in all of Major League Soccer as well as becoming the second club in MLS history post-2000 to start with eight wins in nine matches (San Jose).

It didn’t take long for the Whitecaps to get started. Emmanuel Sabbi’s cross found Thomas Müller in the box who then set up Cheikh Sabaly for the opening score. Sixteen minutes later, Brian White would find Zak Steffen well off his line and curled the ball past to make it 2-0.

However, Colorado would pull one back in the 33rd minute. A cross from Georgi Minoungou came to Dante Sealy, Yohei Takaoka made the initial save, but Raphael Navarro would bundle the ball in eventually for his seventh goal of the year.

The Whitecaps were more likely to get a third before the Rapids an equalizer. Bruno Caicedo had a goal chalked off for handball in the 77th minute, but Caicedo would find White making a run in the 85th minute and the latter would get his eighth goal of the year and the Whitecaps would get the three points.

With the World Cup coming to town, the Whitecaps will be on the road until August 1st. Their first of eight road matches in league play will be next Saturday at LA Galaxy (7:30pm PT, Apple TV). Colorado has a US Open Cup match on Wednesday at home to Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the USL Championship (7pm MT, Paramount+).
