MK Dons celebrate Community Day with convincing victory over Harrogate Town, but will injuries halt their promotion push?

Milton Keynes Dons marked their Community Day in style with a commanding 4–1 victory over relegation-threatened Harrogate Town at Stadium MK, keeping their promotion push firmly on track.

Goals from Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Luke Offord, Aaron Collins and Ben Wiles ensured all three points for the hosts, despite Harrogate taking an early lead through Tobias Brenan.

A club-record league attendance of 23,465 packed into Stadium MK, surpassing the previous record of 21,545 set during a victory over Bolton Wanderers in 2017.

Buoyed by the lively atmosphere, both sides began energetically but struggled to carve out clear chances during the opening stages. The first moment of real quality arrived in the 25th minute, when the visitors stunned the home crowd by taking the lead.

The goal came somewhat against what the form guide coming into the contest would have suggested, as 19-year-old Tobias Brenan reacted quickest to a loose ball and finished confidently.

The strike was significant for Harrogate not only in the context of the match, but also in their ongoing battle against relegation. Brenan has made an impressive start to life with the Sulphurites, scoring twice in just six appearances, and is quickly becoming an important attacking outlet for manager Simon Weaver.

However, the goal sparked an immediate response from the hosts.

Just four minutes later, MK Dons restored parity through Rushian Hepburn-Murphy. After good work from wing-back Aaron Nemane, Hepburn-Murphy forced an initial effort that was blocked, but the rebound fell kindly to the forward, who made no mistake with his second attempt to score his seventh goal of the season.

Despite the equaliser, Harrogate continued to create promising openings and arguably should have regained the lead before the interval.

Several dangerous deliveries into the penalty area went begging, while promising moves broke down due to misplaced final passes or a lack of finishing presence in the box — a familiar issue for a side struggling near the foot of the table.

Those missed opportunities proved costly just before half-time.

From a well-delivered corner by Dan Crowley, centre-back Luke Offord rose highest to power a header into the net and give MK Dons the lead on the stroke of the interval.

It may have come against the run of play, but head coach Paul Warne and the home supporters were unlikely to complain.

MK Dons wasted little time extending their advantage after the restart. Five minutes into the second half, Aaron Collins produced the moment of the match.

Collecting the ball outside the penalty area, the Welsh forward cleverly shaped to cross, deceiving the defenders before cutting inside and firing a precise strike into the bottom corner.

It was a superbly taken goal and one of the standout finishes across the leagues this weekend.

The hosts effectively sealed the result in the 63rd minute. Substitute Liam Kelly made an immediate impact, delivering an excellent cross into the area which Ben Wiles met with a well-placed header just moments after coming onto the pitch.

The victory continues MK Dons’ impressive run of form, extending their unbeaten league streak to eleven matches, last falling on New Years’ Day. Recent results — including a dramatic late equaliser away at Cambridge and this comeback win — underline the growing momentum within Warne’s side as the season approaches its decisive final weeks.

That momentum has been achieved despite long-term injuries to key players such as Callum Paterson and Kaine Wilson. Encouragingly for the Dons, reinforcements could soon arrive with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Will Collar nearing returns within the next month.

Warne will also take confidence from the depth within his squad. Players stepping in have delivered when called upon, with Hepburn-Murphy demonstrating his capability leading the line despite not being a natural striker. Valuable minutes have also been shared among squad members including Crowley, Hogan, Tomlinson and Leko, ensuring the team remains fresh during a demanding run-in.

With confidence high and promotion hopes still very much alive, MK Dons will look to carry their strong form into the remaining fixtures. At this stage of the season, every point matters — and Warne will be determined to ensure his side maintains its upward momentum.
