MK Dons and Notts County play out an exciting draw, but how will the game affect the promotion race?

Off the back of two consecutive victories over the Christmas period, the Dons extended their impressive run of form by taking a valuable point from fellow promotion contenders Notts County in a 1–1 draw.

A goal apiece from Tom Iorpenda and Callum Paterson saw the points shared.

The two wins, followed by this draw, have significantly strengthened their league position, lifting them from fifth to fourth while also disrupting the momentum of key rivals.

Having convincingly dispatched Swindon Town on Boxing Day, the point earned three days later against Notts County looks an increasingly important result.

The first half, however, is unlikely to live long in the memory for either set of supporters.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium, though the most notable opportunities fell County’s way. The first fell to former Don and now County striker Matt Dennis.

From a well-delivered corner by Maz Kouhyar—his fourth of the match after three earlier efforts were cleared—Dennis rose highest but could only direct his header narrowly over the bar despite being unchallenged.

Despite the lack of excitement, the deadlock was broken on the stroke of half-time.

The second and most crucial chance came and was taken.

Tom Iorpenda finished off a well-worked team move to give the visitors the lead, breaking into the penalty area before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner, leaving Craig MacGillivray with no chance.

While opportunities were scarce, Notts County controlled the contest for much of the opening period.

The Dons were second best across the pitch, and the goal reflected the pattern of play.

Evidently dissatisfied, head coach Paul Warne acted decisively at the interval, making three substitutions in an attempt to inject urgency and regain control.

The Dons continued to look lethargic and disjointed early in the second half, struggling to build any sustained pressure.

Warne turned to his bench once more, and the change paid immediate dividends.

Just three minutes later, following the introduction of Dan Crowley for Liam Kelly—Crowley receiving a mixed reception, to put it lightly, from the travelling support after his January 2025 switch—the Dons executed a counter-attack to perfection.

Collecting the ball on the halfway line, they surged forward in numbers, overwhelming the County defence.

The move culminated with half-time substitute Rushian Hepburn-Murphy forcing a strong save from Kelle Roos, before Callum Paterson reacted quickest to fire home the rebound and restore parity.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, committing numbers forward at set pieces and corners in search of a decisive moment, but neither could find the breakthrough.

To collect seven points from a possible nine during this demanding run of fixtures—with the chance to make it ten from twelve on New Year’s Day—would have been a return Paul Warne would have gladly accepted beforehand.

Maintaining momentum is the hallmark of a strong side, and picking up points when performances are below par is equally crucial.

Doing so against one of the league’s form teams, while also halting their progress, represents a significant positive.

That said, Warne will be far from satisfied with the opening-half display.

The lack of cohesion will concern the head coach, particularly given the relentless fixture schedule.

With only two changes made from the emphatic win over Swindon, questions may be asked as to whether Kane Thompson-Sommers and Jon Mellish were able to match the standards of those they replaced.

Additionally, positional rotations involving four players may have disrupted fluency, or perhaps credit should be given to Notts County for effectively stifling their opponents and keeping them at arm’s length.

Only time will tell how these issues are addressed, but the focus now turns firmly to New Year’s Day.
