Chester, PA
Everyone loves an afternoon home game, and virtually every seat in the house was taken for the Philadelphia Union’s match against the New England Revolution. Philadelphia came out on top by the lone goal scored in the contest.
There was plenty at stake in the game. The Union had suffered a spate of bad form of late, with an away 7-0 trouncing by Vancouver and, days later, an Open Cup 3-1 loss to Nashville. Saturday, the Union were hoping to turn things around and hold onto first place in the MLS East against a New England Revolution team that had just lost its head coach, Caleb Porter. New England hoped that Philadelphia’s bad form would continue and that their playoff ambitions would be realized. The loss eliminated New England from the playoff picture.
The game itself was far from a masterpiece of skill. New England more than held its own in the first half, but the second half went to Philadelphia. In the 70th minute, Philadelphia’s Milan Iloski had possession close to New England’s goal line. Miloski made a back pass to the left toward the duo of Tai Baribo and a cutting Bruno Damiani. Damiani connected for the only goal in the match, sending the ball into the bottom left of the Revolution’s goal.
Baribo made the second most important play just minutes later, when New England’s Peyton Miller fouled Quinn Sullivan. In apparent defense of Sullivan, Baribo baited Miller with a shoulder-shove and Miller in retaliation threw the ball at Baribo. The consequence was a red card for Miller and a yellow for Baribo, leaving New England with a 10-man side.
New England carried on with the 10 man side, and despite New England’s last-minute stoppage time shot that was saved by the Philadelphia keeper, Andre Blake.
