Bellamy’s squad is sign of the times

Craig Bellamy’s latest Welsh squad for the forthcoming internationals against Kazakhstan and Canada reflects the current health of the game in Wales.

With a tricky World Cup tie away in Kazakhstan followed by a rare fixture in Swansea to face Canada in a friendly, Bellamy has, as ever, not steered clear from debate and even controversy.

Most noticeably perhaps, the colourful exploits of Wrexham have been recognised by the Wales boss. Three Wrexham players feature in the squad. New signings Danny Ward, Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead all make the squad. This is the first time in 17 years that the Norh Wales club has seen its name on the list of players named by a Welsh national manager.

Elsewhere, Swansea City’s consistent, if unspectacular, spell in the Championship is recognised by the inclusion of Ben Cabango and Liam Cullen, who will hope to appear for Wales on their home turf against Canada.

The Premier League is well represented in the squad, following the promotion of Leeds United, who have three names in the squad: Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon and exciting winger Dan James. Ethan Ampadu is sadly injured but his chance will surely come again, maybe even as a future skipper of the national side.

Other form players named include Dai Brooks of Bournemouth, Brennan Johnson of Spurs and the Fulham star Harry Wilson.

Despite Cardiff City’s relegation to League 1, Bellamy has recognised the contribution made to the Bluebirds by their clutch of promising youngsters, naming defenders Dylan Lawlor and Ronan Kpakio in the squad. Much debate has taken place though in relation to a player who did not make the list of names. Rubin Colwill has many admirers but Bellamy has called for greater consistency from the talented lad. Injuries and suspensions may still see Colwill named in the squad though perhaps, perhaps along with his brother Joel Colwill, who has also impressed for the Bluebirds this season.

Other names to watch out for include Jordan James, who is the subject of transfer speculation and Stoke’s Sorba Thomas who has impressed observers. James could even become a fourth Wrexham player in the squad if some transfer stories are to be believed.

At Under 21 Level, Wales boss Mattie Jones has also raised eyebrows, naming two goalkeepers from the JD Cymru League in his latest squad. Kit Margetson, on loan at Connah’s Quay from Swansea City is joined by Luke Armstrong who is on loan at Penybont from Cardiff City. These are brave calls from Jones but show the value of young players going out on loan to gain experience. It’s also great recognition for the domestic game in Wales. Hopefully at least one will run out against Denmark at Newport.
