VANCOUVER, BC–Bayern Munch and Germany legend Thomas Müller is making the journey across the Atlantic and almost to the Pacific as he joined the Vancouver Whitecaps on a free transfer through 2026 being a TAM player for the remainder of 2025 and then a designated player in 2026. In order to obtain the discovery rights to Müller, the Whitecaps sent $300,000 in guaranteed General Allocation Money (GAM) and an additional $100K in conditional GAM to FC Cincinnati.
“Thomas is a world-class player – the ultimate raumdeuter; interpreter of space – known for his elite chance creation, unmatched spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement,” said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC CEO & sporting director.
“He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team. Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious.
“This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership – a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver.”
It is not an exaggeration to consider Müller a ‘statement signing’. He won 33 trophies in 17 seasons with Bayern. That included 13 Bundesliga titles, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, and 2 FIFA Club World Cups. In 756 appearances for Bayern, he score 250 goals and 276 assists. With Germany, he won the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and scored 45 goals and 41 assists in 131 caps.
“I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,” said Müller. “I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost, I’m coming to win.
“I’ve had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sørensen, and now I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs.”
Müller joins a Vancouver Whitecaps side in the race for the Supporters’ Shield and in the semifinals of the Canadian Championship. The Whitecaps’ next match is in league play at San Jose on Saturday at 7:30pm PT (Apple TV). The first home match that Müller could play in would be Sunday, August 17th vs. Houston (6pm PT, Apple TV).
