Report: Mihailovic to be transferred to Toronto FC

COMMERCE CITY, CO–Djordje Mihailovic was conspicuously not in the lineup for the Rapids’ 2-1 loss to Club Tijuana in Sunday’s Leagues Cup action due to personal reasons. However, reports are saying the the Rapids have agreed to an $8 million transfer fee to send Mihailovic to Toronto FC.

The transfer fee would be a club record for the Rapids. Mihailovic joined the Rapids in 2024 from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and has scored 20 goals and 21 assists in 53 regular season matches. He had become the lead playmaking engine in Colorado during this time. Should he move to Toronto, he will be joining his fourth MLS club following stints with Chicago Fire (2017-2020) and CF Montreal (2021-2022).

Reports continue to say that TFC are working on contract extension for the 26-year-old. Mihailović is currently the highest paid player on Colorado with a guaranteed compensation of $1.775 million. Toronto is currently 14th in the Eastern Conference table and having recently offloaded a combined $21.3 million in salary in Lorenzo Insigne and Fernando Bernardeschi.

The Rapids are currently in the ninth and final playoff spot in the West and offloading Milhailovic to say the very least is a risky move. It is currently unclear as to why this sudden desire to transfer to Toronto at this time.

Colorado Rapids 1-2 Club Tijuana

On Sunday, the Rapids fell to Tijuana, 2-1. Jackson Porozo pounced on a rebound in the 39th minute after an initial shot by Unai Bilbao off a corner went off the post. Tijuana’s second goal was also off a rebound in the 72nd minute. Alejandro Gomez’s initial shot was saved by Zak Steffen, but substitute Ramiro Arciga would put in the rebound.

Two minutes later, Porozo ended up scoring for the Rapids heading in a cross from Oliver Larraz. Both teams are 1-1-0 in Phase One of Leagues Cup play and both teams are unlikely to advance to the quarterfinals. Colorado hosts Cruz Azul in their final Phase One game on Thursday (6:30pm MT, Apple TV), while Club Tijuana go to Seattle to play the Sounders on Wednesday (8pm PT, Apple TV).
