VICTORIA, BC–And now for something completely different. With the Little League World Series just around the corner, regional tournaments are taking place all over the World. Canada has its own place in Williamsport and the Canadian Little League Championship is underway in Victoria.
The grandson of our Vancouver-based photographer Gerrit te Hennepe is participating with the Little Mountain Little League of Vancouver. Their first two games were both wins–an 18-0 win over Mirabel, Quebec, and a 7-0 win over Calgary. On Thursday night, they face the hosts in the Layritz LL of Victoria.
The tournament runs through August 7th with the winner to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. British Columbia has been the dominant province in Little League winning seven of the last eight Canadian titles (Little Mountain winning in 2022) and 30 times overall. The closest a Canadian team has gotten in Williamsport in recent times was in 2017 when White Rock, BC got to the International Semifinal. Twice a BC side got third overall with Trail, BC in 1990 and Langley, BC in 1997. Stoney Creek, ON finished runners-up to Windsor Locks, CT in 1965.
The first photos from Gerrit te Hennepe include the ferry ride from Vancouver to Victoria as well as Wednesday’s action. More photos are on the way after Sunday’s action.
