It may have been a herculean task for the Philadelphia Union to walk away with three points on Wednesday evening, but that is exactly what the team did. Down 0-2, the Union leveled the score and went on to win the contest after a third goal in stoppage time. While exciting for Philadelphia fans, one had to feel some sympathy for the L.A. Galaxy — last year’s MLS Cup winner that can’t seem to buy a win this year in MLS play.
After the New York Red Bulls trounced the Galaxy last Saturday with a score of 7-0, the Galaxy could have used that loss to ignite its play against the Union on Wednesday. Indeed, the game seemed to start that way. In the 31st minute, the Galaxy’s Mauricio Cuevas scored on Philadelphia with an assist from Marco Reus on a fast break. Six minutes later Diego Fagúndez scored for the Galaxy, on a second assist from Reus. By half-time, the Galaxy was two scores up on the Union.
But somehow Philadelphia managed two quick goals early in the second half. In the 48th minute, a shot from Jakob Glesnes was redirected by Nathan Harriel into Los Angeles’s goal. Then in the 50th minute, Danley Jean Jacques crossed the ball right directly onto Tai Baribo’s head. Baribo ‘s header leveled the score at 2-2.
Shortly thereafter, Alejandro Bedoya subbed in for Quinn Sullivan and Bedoya seemed to give the Union’s weary legs a shot of adrenaline.
At the 6th minute of an eight-minute stoppage time, the unbelievable occurred. After a corner, Mikael Uhre had the ball close to the end line. He scooped the ball over the Galaxy defenders onto the head of a wide-open Tai Baribo. Baribo directed the header past the Galaxy’s keeper John McCarthy for the third Philadelphia goal. That goal gave the Union three points and Baribo the lead in the Golden Boot race.
