Philadelphia Glides Past D.C. United 3-0

May 26, 2025

Chester, PA

It wasn’t exactly a pretty game , but the Philadelphia Union was able to coast to a 3-0 victory over D.C. United Saturday night.  For Philadelphia Union fans, there are two objectives for a successful home game:  1) calling for Jakob Glesnes to score; and 2) begging the coaching staff to sub-in Cavan Sullivan.  It was a successful game.

Calling for the center-back Glesnes to score harkens back to 2020, when he scored off of a free kick against LAFC.  Better known and loved was his 2021 overtime goal in the 122th minute in the playoff game against the New York Red Bulls.   So imagine the crowd’s delight when Glesnes pulled off another unlikely goal in the 15th minute of Saturday’s game off of a Frankie Westfield cross.  The cross landed directly on Glesnes’s foot, and he shot hard without letting the ball drop.  The score was 1-0 at the half.

Danley Jean Jacques has proved to be a welcome addition to Philadelphia.  He has a Midas touch on defense, but had not shown to be much of an offensive threat — that is, until the last two games in both of which he scored.  Against D.C. United, his goal came at the 56th minute, with the assist going to Quinn Sullivan.

Philadelphia’s Bruno Damiani scored the last of the Union’s three goals at the 77th minute.  It came off of a pass from Mikael Uhre to Damiani, who managed to pivot around — while being hugged by — D.C.United’s Lucas Bartlett.

The local Cavan fans chanted to see the 15-year old Cavan Sullivan play and in the 62nd minute, Cavan replaced Jesús Bueno, who had started due to Jovan Lukic’s double yellow the prior weekend against Atlanta United. Philadelphia fans were given a full thirty minutes of Cavan time.

The Union are now in third place on the MLS East Table, above Inter Miami, with the best goal differential number on the Table.
