Barnet’s promotion push paused but recent stumbles don’t derail League Two dream

Barnet FC are on the brink of a return to the football league, however a recent blip in results has put a temporary halt to the celebrations.

A wobbly start to the season for Dean Brennan’s side losing on opening day 2-1 to Halifax town, however what was to follow would be a crucial victory against title challengers Forest Green with Zak Brunt scoring at the death and a thumping 7-0 win to round off a positive month against newcomers in the division Tamworth.

York City demonstrated that they can launch a title bid after a 3-1 win against Barnet in October, despite Bailey Hobson scoring for Barnet first.

Barnet losing their top goalscorer Nicke Kabamba early in January to Bromley had Bees fans expecting the club to buy an immediate replacement, they invested in Lee Ndlovu from Boreham Wood and Dom Telford in a loan from League Two Barrow.

A crazy turn of events led to Toby Savin joining on an “emergency” loan from Shrewsbury Town in February , and starting just hours after being announced as a goalkeeper injury crisis took command, but so did Barnet winning against league rivals York in an impressive 3-1 victory at a bouncing Hive.

York piled on the pressure with determination, a 1-0 away win in Hartlepool and the same result at Yeovil, despite Barnet having points over them, they kept pushing and the league title can still head either way.

Barnet’s struggles have come recently, losing to Braintree who feared relegation just a matter of weeks ago, alongside a disappointing draw to Wealdstone, another contender for relegation near the bottom four.

Barnet can allow a slight slip up as their points over second is still commanding however they still need 7 more points to secure promotion to League Two, regardless of York’s results.
