Luis Mario Díaz Espinoza is a 26-year-old, 5’11, 159lb winger from Nicoya, Costa Rica.

At the club level, Díaz has played 215 career games (12,434 minutes) across Costa Rica & United States. Díaz began his career with Costa Rican side Municipal Grecia (2016-18). In 2019, he then signed for Costa Rican side Heredino (2019). In the summer of 2019, Díaz was transferred to MLS side Columbus Crew (2019-23) for a $1,000,000 fee. In September of 2023, he was waived by Columbus and subsequently signed with Colorado Rapids (2023) until the end of the season. Following the end of his stint in the United States, Díaz returned to Costa Rica to sign with Deportivo Saprissa (2024). At the conclusion of the season, Deportivo Saprissa had decided not to renew Díaz’ contract.

Internationally, Díaz has made 8 senior appearances (306 minutes) for the Costa Rican National Team. He appeared in the 2019 Gold Cup and has appeared in Concacaf Nations League matches & World Cup Qualifiers. He has 1 career international assist.

In total career numbers, the winger has contributed 13 career goals, 31 assists, along with 38 yellow cards and 3 red cards.

On December 20th, Costa Rican journalist Kevin Jiménez had reported that Díaz was close to signing with the New England Revolution & that the player was no longer with Deportivo Saprissa.

Sources close to Kevin Jiménez had confirmed that Díaz had left Saprissa officially on December 24th.

The club announced his departure later that day.

Jiménez later stated that Díaz will be joining the New England Revolution. My sources confirmed that to be the case.

On December 30th, Jiménez signed a one-year contract with New England through the 2025 MLS campaign with an additional club option for the 2026 & 2027 campaign.

His signing was announced on January 2nd.

Díaz will return to Major League Soccer to play under Caleb Porter for the second time in his career. (He won 2020 MLS Cup & 2021 Campeones Cup with Porter in Columbus).
