The Deep Dish: Fire begin to make technical staff moves

CHICAGO, IL–Chicago Fire FC has begun to form its new look soccer operations. Those plans will not include assistants Carlos Garcia and Paulo Nagamura as they were let go. Both were assistants under Frank Klopas this past season.

“While these were difficult decisions, after careful review we felt that a fresh start was important as we head into the 2025 season,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “I’d like to sincerely thank Carlos and Paulo for their contributions to the Club and wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

In addition, the Fire added a Head of Recruitment in former player Michael Stephens. Stephens joins the Fire after being part of the technical staff for LA Galaxy the past three seasons. Stephens will be charged with leading the club’s efforts in identifying, recruiting, and acquiring world-class talent.

“I’m pleased to welcome Michael back to the Club as our Head of Recruitment,” said Berhalter. “Having worked closely with him at the U.S. Men’s National Team, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication and attention to detail that he brings to talent recruitment. His deep knowledge of MLS, combined with his experience at the international level, will be a significant asset as we look to build a winning team and establish the Fire as a leader in player recruitment.”

Stephens played four seasons with LA Galaxy from 2010 to 2013 before playing with Norwegian side Stabaek in 2014 and then the Fire in 2015 and 2016. Stephens was also a first team scout for the Fire in 2018 and 2019.
