Charlotte bounces back with a four-goal performance against the New England Revolution

Charlotte FC bounced back from a three-match losing streak with their best show of attacking this season, defeating the New England Revolution 4-0.

Charlotte made some changes to the starting XI against, with Andrew Privett returning to the starting lineup, moving Tim Ream to left back, Liel Abada on the left wing, Pep Biel remaining on the right wing and a midfield trio of Ashley Westwood, Júnior Urso and Brandt Bronico.

Charlotte put together a couple decent chances early on, with Andrew Privett receiving a cross from Pep Biel following a corner and missed a header in the 12^th minute, as well as in the 16^th minute Pep Biel passed the ball in to Karol Świderski whose first shot was blocked, but he stayed with it and was able to take another shot from outside the box that missed high.

Following the Świderski miss, New England had a half chance where Nacho Gil beat Tim Ream on the wing and delivered a ball in to Giacomo Vrioni who could not get a good touch on the ball to put a shot on target.

Charlotte had a big chance in the 23^rd minute with a pass from Nathan Byrne lifted to Urso in the middle of the box, but his header missed just wide to the right of the goal. New England had a big chance of their own in the 28^th minute with Vrioni receiving the ball near the goal and taking a shot that was saved by Kristijan Kahlina at point blank range at the post.

Westwood delivered a good ball to Abada at the far post, but he couldn’t get a good touch on the ball, missing the shot and allowing the keeper to easily collect the ball in the 38^th minute. Less than a minute later in the 39^th minute, Abada had another chance that was saved by the goalkeeper, ricocheted into a shot for Pep Biel that was saved again, then took a deflection to Abada who put the ball in the net to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

The second half opened with Kahlina making a diving save at the near post on a shot from Esmir Bajraktarevic in the 48^th minute. Kahlina made another diving save at the same post in the 53^rd minute, this time on a shot from Vrioni.

Urso had another chance at a goal for Charlotte in the 57^th minute with a header from a cross in from Pep Biel, but the shot was saved with a diving effort by Aljaz Ivacic. A few minutes later in the 60^th minute, Abada received the ball in space on a counterattack with no help, he created enough space for a shot near the top of the box and missed just high of the goal.

Charlotte made three substitutions in the 62^nd and 63^rd minute, bringing on Djibril Diani, Patrick Agyemang and Kerwin Vargas for Urso, Świderski and Abada. Agyemang would make an instant impact, receiving the ball on the right wing, dribbling to the byline, drawing defenders in then passing back to Pep Biel at the edge of the six-yard box, who got the ball past the diving goalkeeper to double Charlotte’s lead in the 65^th minute.

Starting in the 70^th minute, New England had to play with 10 men after Dylan Borerro was shown a yellow card for a foul on Byrne then immediately shown another yellow.

It didn’t take Charlotte long to score another goal after Borerro was sent off. Charlotte stopped an attack and played the ball up to Pep Biel who played the ball to Agyemang on a run into the box. Agyemang took the shot on his first touch, beating the goalkeeper to the far post for a 3-0 lead in the 77^th minute.

Charlotte was not done after Agyemang’s goal, as Vargas put the ball past the goalkeeper at the far post in the 87^th minute for Charlotte’s fourth goal, the most they have scored in a match this season.

Charlotte had a total of 24 shots in the match, a much-needed output after just four shots in the midweek matchup against Orlando City. The 4-0 win was enough to put Charlotte in sixth place in the MLS Eastern Conference, passing NYCFC on goal differential.

Charlotte will go back on the road for their next match against Inter Miami on Saturday, September 28.
