Charlotte FC acquires three new players in the summer transfer window

MLS summer transfer deadline day has come and went with Charlotte FC making three signings.

Tim Ream

Charlotte announced the signing of United States national team defender Tim Ream on August 7.

It was reported earlier in the summer transfer window that Charlotte was closing in on a deal with Ream, who is leaving Fulham after 312 appearances in nine seasons.

The 36-year-old Ream also has 61 caps for the United States men’s national team, including four appearances at the 2022 World Cup.

Ream joins a stout Charlotte backline that has allowed the second fewest goals in MLS so far this season. Ream should help provide the Charlotte back line with veteran leadership and experience as Charlotte’s starting center back pairing for most of the season so far consisted of 22-year-old Adilson Malanda and 24-year-old Andrew Privett.

Ream’s first match with Charlotte will come on August 24 as Charlotte hosts Ream’s former club, New York Red Bulls.

Idan Toklomati

Charlotte reportedly acquired the Israeli forward from Maccabi Petah Tikva for a fee around $3 million. Toklomati participated in the 2024 Olympics with the Israeli national team alongside Charlotte winger Liel Abada.

Pep Biel

After pursuing many options for an attacking midfielder in the summer transfer window, Charlotte has reportedly signed Pep Biel on loan from Olympiakos. The loan runs through the winter with the option to buy.

In their pursuit for an attacking midfielder, Charlotte had a deal fall through to acquire Feyenoord midfielder Calvin Stengs and had talks with Newcastle United about Miguel Almirón, ultimately Charlotte could not get a deal for either and on deadline day was able to complete a transfer for Biel.

Charlotte’s attack has struggled this season, scoring just 30 goals in 25 matches. The piece that has been missing for Charlotte has been a creative attacking midfielder, with the midfield cycling through many different combinations of players in the starting XI.

With the Biel transfer being a loan with the option to buy, Charlotte can reevaluate the position in the offseason if necessary.
