Coach Danny Lee leaves San Diego Legion

As San Diego awaits the Major League Rugby National Championship on August 4th between the Seattle Seawolves and New England Free Jacks, the local club has parted with their coach.

The Legion announced that the contract of Head Coach Danny Lee would not be renewed beyond the conclusion of the 2024 Major League Rugby (MLR) season.

A press release gave more detail:

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, Danny was delayed in New Zealand until New Year’s Eve 2021. Despite this challenge, he led the Legion to an 8-8 regular season record in his first year, reaching the playoffs. In his second season, the team finished with a 15-1 regular season record and reached the MLR Championship Final. This year, the team finished 11-5 and made it to the first round of the playoffs.

The San Diego Legion organization and ownership express their deep gratitude for Danny Lee’s tireless efforts, commitment to the Legion Academy program, and his contributions to the growth of rugby both locally in San Diego and across the broader Southern Californian region. His dedication to the community, often going above and beyond, has left a lasting impact on players and fans alike.

“We thank Danny for his invaluable contributions to the San Diego Legion and the broader rugby community,” said Ryan Patterson, Owner of San Diego Legion. “Danny’s commitment to growing the game from a grassroots level and his dedication to the entire Legion organization have been truly commendable.”

As we look to the future, the San Diego Legion will commence the search for a new Head Coach for the upcoming 2025 season. The organization remains committed to building on the strong foundation established during Danny’s tenure and continuing to strive for excellence both on and off the field.

We extend our best wishes to Danny, his wife Hayley, and their children Koby and Jonty, for all their future endeavors.

Thank you, Danny, for your hard work, dedication, and the positive impact you’ve had on our team and community.
