Hull derby to kick things off in the Betfred Super League

In true Rugby League fashion, round one of the Betfred Super League has served up some brilliant fixtures to keep fans’ eyes peeled, starting off with the Hull derby at the MKM Stadium.

There was mixed seasons this year in East Yorkshire, with the Robins falling short in the Challenge Cup Final and Super League Play offs, and a year of frustration for FC, who comfortably avoided a relegation battle without ever really threatening the top six places.

Elsewhere in Round One, Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards take centre stage on the Friday night as they host Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants respectively, whilst St Helens are on home soil against newly promoted London Broncos, who take part in their first top flight game since 2019.

Saints will look to get off to a strong start after losing out on their fifth Super League title in a row last term, whilst London will be looking to produce a similar year to that of Leigh, who were promoted 12 months ago and finished the season with a Challenge Cup honour next to their newly branded name.

And it’s a clash on familiar faces at Headingley as Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft face off against their former side in their debut appearances for their new outfit. With the pair signing from the AJ Bell in the off-season, Headingley will certainly produce fireworks with an intense battle set to take centre stage.

Following Friday night’s action, focus then turns to Saturday with the final two fixtures of round one.

Castleford Tigers host Super League Champions Wigan Warriors at the Jungle, before Warrington Wolves kick off their new era under Sam Burgess in the south of France, against last years’ competitions Runners-up Catalans Dragons.

Wigan have boosted their squad considerably ahead of this season with the latest bit of business being Ryan Hampshire, who has been tied down for another year at the D.W. But in a tight, intense atmosphere that the Jungle creates, it’s no given that the Champions will get their title defence off to a winning start.

All in all, it’s set to be a cracking opening weekend with plenty of questions set to be answered and stories to be told, which epitomises what the Betfred Super League is all about.
