Now is the time to ditch the Nations League for the sake of football

After what has been a thrilling Premier League season, with the best two sides battling it out for the right to be crowned champions, we now have the complete nonsense of the Nations League.

Bought in to replace so called meaningless friendlies, this competition really should be given a rest now.

England have had to face Hungary where they looked sluggish and mediocre and were second best against Germany in Munich. Hardly surprising when you consider these players have had to play a season which has taken a greater toll on England’s players than anybody else.

Players are only human beings, and they have looked to be suffering from fatigue, which is no surprise given the pressure these players are put under season after season.

The Nations League is a mini summer tournament that everybody agrees is something that rates low down in most people’s priorities of players, managers and most importantly fans.

Other domestic leagues in Europe are easier than the Premier League to not only compete in but to win as well.

The months of June and July should be for rest and recuperation, but no we are still having to wheel out players who are completely knackered from their exploits of the past nine months.

There will be some who say that it does mean something to win the Nations League, but recently I asked 15 people of different ages if they can remember who won the Nations League last year.

Even I struggled, and I still got it wrong along with the other 15 who shook their head at me and said they hadn’t a clue.

Just goes to show why I feel that we should discard this type of competition. Not just for the fans sake but mainly for the health of the players who are going to pick up a succession of unwanted injuries due to playing too much football.
