‘Huddersfield Takeover’ will be London bound next weekend

The capital of England will be having a heavy Yorkshire contingent travelling south next weekend as fans travel from the white rose county to support their sides.

The Huddersfield Giants were the first to book their place in the capital after sealing their place in the Challenge Cup final which is to be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 28th.

But if the Rugby success wasn’t enough, Huddersfield Town then went and booked their place in the EFL Championship Play-Off final which will be held at Wembley Stadium on May 29th.

Town are no strangers to Play-Off success having been promoted via penalties in the 2017 Play-Offs after a 0-0 draw with Reading.

But the Giants haven’t been at this stage of their respective competition in a while. 2009 was the last time the Giants reached the final, facing Warrington Wolves at Wembley but fell to a 16-25 defeat.

The last time the Giants went all the way to lifting the Challenge Cup was back in 1953, making it 69 years since their last success in the competition. But after an impressive start to the campaign under Ian Watson, the Giants will be quietly confident they can pull off an upset and get past the Wigan Warriors to lift the trophy.

Looking ahead to the football side of the weekend, and Huddersfield have shocked many this season but are deservedly firmly in the race for promotion.

After finishing 20^th last campaign, not many supporters would’ve expected this turnaround from Carlos Corberán’s men who managed a third-placed finish, stealing in above Notts Forest on the final day.

But after Steve Cooper’s revelation this season at the City Ground, both stories are deserving of a fairy-tale ending after Cooper took over at Forest when they were bottom of the Championship table after eight games played.

With Sorba Thomas back fit for the Terriers, Huddersfield will be hoping their starlet can give them the boost they need to see success under the Wembley arch once again and bring Premier League football back to the John Smith’s Stadium.

Regardless of the results, it’s going to be a quiet Yorkshire town next weekend as Huddersfield fans from both sports look set to enjoy two sporting days out in two of England’s most impressive stadiums.
