Women’s FA Cup Final – Chelsea aiming for League and Cup Double while Man City also looking for second silverware of season

A record crowd for a Women’s FA Cup Final is expected with over 50,000 tickets already sold last Wednesday. This looks set to break the previous record attendance of 45,423 set in 2018 when Chelsea beat Arsenal.

Chelsea’s womens team will head out onto the Wembley turf on Sunday less than 24 hours after their men’s team contested their showcase end of season finale.

The London side will be hoping for a second league and cup double in a row after winning the Super League last Sunday in dramatic fashion. The Blues came back twice from being behind to defeat Manchester United 4-2 and secure their third championship title in a row, finishing above Arsenal by a single point.

The Blues will also be looking for the perfect send off for Ji So-yun who plays her last game for Chelsea after 8 years, 208 appearances and 11 trophies to date. The South Korean midfielder made an impressive start for Chelsea back in 2014 winning the Players’ Player of the Year award in her first season. The next season she won the 2015 PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year and scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final.

After Sunday So-yun heads back to South Korea where she has had an impressive international career – she is the all-time top scorer for the national team with 58 goals as well as holding the record for being the youngest goalscorer for her country at the age of 15 back in 2006.

Despite finishing third behind Chelsea and Arsenal, Manchester City are currently on a sensational winning run of 13 matches in all competitions after a poor start to the season. The run includes the League Cup trophy they lifted back in early March after defeating Chelsea 3-1.

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor was however keen to play down their exceptional recent form.

”We’re going into it in form, but Chelsea are too. It’s a one-off game and it is about who manages the game well enough on the day, who plays the game and not the occasion.”

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes is looking forward to the showcase final at the national stadium.

“The women’s game wins again on Sunday with hopefully a record crowd and two amazing teams full of talent.”

The match kicks off at 14:30 and is live on BBC One.
