County Championship Roundup – Second round of matches – Big wins for both Surrey and Lancashire

The second round of County Championship matches saw glorious weather over the Easter weekend with some comprehensive victories in Division One.

Previously unbeaten Hampshire suffered their first loss of the season when they were beaten inside three days by Surrey at the Kia Oval by an innings and 17 runs.

Surrey outplayed Hampshire after posting 467 in their first innings with Ollie Pope hitting 127.

Hampshire were dismissed for 223 with Jamie Overton taking 5-54. Surrey elected to enforce the follow on with Hampshire bowled out for 227, with Joe Weatherley top scoring with 87, and Overton bagging another three wickets with Jordan Clark 4-55 contributing to a big Surrey victory.

Lancashire opened up their championship campaign with a 10 wicket victory over Kent at Canterbury.

The Red Rose county posted a massive 506 with centuries from Steven Croft 155 and Dane Vilas 124 with Phil Salt falling three short of three figures.

Despite a century from Ben Compton, Kent were bowled out for 260 with Matt Parkinson picking up 4-66. Kent were asked to follow on and again it was Compton who lead the Kent resistance with his second century of the game 115, before the hosts were dismissed for 279 to leave Lancashire the simple task of 34 to win.

A low scoring affair at Taunton saw Essex get home by the narrowest of margins to pick up their first win of the campaign.

Somerset were shot out for 109 with three wickets apiece for Sam Cook, Mark Steketee and Simon Harmer.

Essex also struggled on the Taunton wicket, but a battling half century from in form Sir Alastair Cook pulled Essex round to have a useful lead of 71, despite 7-57 from Craig Overton.

Shane Snater claimed 6-36 as Somerset were bowled out for 154 to leave Essex a tricky 84 for victory. The visitors were struggling on 28-6 but were rescued by a knock of 29 from Adam Rossington to get Essex over the line.

At Bristol, Yorkshire picked up their first win in the championship on their first start of the season by beating Gloucestershire by six wickets.

A Marcus Harris knock of 136 helped the home side to reach 227 in their first innings. A ton from Harry Brook enabled Yorkshire to hold a first innings lead of 149. Despite a magnificent 177 from James Bracey, the hosts were dismissed for 359 to leave Yorkshire a target of 211.

Thanks to half centuries from Dawid Malan and Brook, the visitors reached their target with the loss of four wickets.

In Division Two, Glamorgan moved to the top of the table after a seven wicket victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Ben Duckett’s 122 helped Notts make 302 in their first innings. Glamorgan managed a first innings lead of 77 thanks to 85 from Sam Northeast. In their second innings Notts were bowled out for 242 with Duckett falling five short of a second century in the match.

Glamorgan were left 166 to win, with an unbeaten half century from Marnus Labuschagne, thew Welsh county reached their target to record their first win of the season.

The two other matches in the division both finished in draws.

Derbyshire posted a massive 505-8 declared with Shan Masood hitting a double century. Sussex were bowled out for 174 but following on second time around batted much better to reach 513-3, with double centuries from Tom Haines and Cheteshwar Pujara.

At Chester-Le-Street the match between Durham and Leicestershire finished in a draw. The highlight of the game was a superb knock of 191 from David Bedingham.
