Dominant display from Wigan Warriors sees them pick up the win against Leeds Rhinos

As Storm Eunice hit up and down the country, it was the Leeds Rhinos who were blown away by Wigan Warriors at the DW Stadium.

A Jai Field masterclass gave Wigan a mightily impressive win in their first home game of the 2022 campaign with a 34-12 win over Leeds Rhinos.

Field grabbed a hat-trick whilst a brace from Sam Powell and a late try from Liam Farrell ensured Matt Peet’s side made it two wins from two in the new season.

The Rhinos started the game as the better side and took an early lead as Blake Austin slipped past a number of challenges before crossing to open the scoring.

However, that is about as good as it got for Leeds as Wigan grew into the game and dominated from that point as they scored their first try.

The first try came in strange circumstances as Willie Isa somehow scorpion kicked the ball into the path of Field who levelled the scores by converting his own try.

As the pressure mounted on Leeds who were crying out for the half-time hooter, Field struck again after claiming an offload from John Bateman and racing through the Rhinos defence to give the Warriors a deserved lead at the interval.

Wigan continued the second period from where they left off, mounting pressure on the Leeds defence and giving them no breathing room whatsoever.

Powell put his name on the scoresheet after latching onto a smart kick from the young Kai Pearce-Paul and slamming the ball down for Wigan’s third try of the night.

The pick of the bunch followed just seconds later as Leeds restarted the play and the ball was caught by Patrick Mago.

He powered his way through several bodies before laying the ball off to Field who ran the length of the pitch and could not be caught as he sealed his hat-trick.

The Warriors were at it again moments later as a kick from Cade Cust was chased by Powell and he put Jack Walker under enough pressure to get another try and complete his brace after a delayed decision from the video referee.

Leeds did manage to score a consolation as Matt Prior crossed after quick-thinking from the visitors despite narrowly missing out on a try on the tackle previous.

Wigan rounded off the scoring with just a few minutes left to play as Farrell received the ball effectively on the line and was left with an easy task to complete the scoring.

There was one last action at the DW as Liam Tindall was sin-binned three minutes from time for a purpose trip on Liam Marshall who looked set to score before his kick went out of play but no penalty try was awarded.

The win for the Warriors meant Head Coach Matt Peet could enjoy back to back wins whilst Leeds are still searching for their first win of the season with a home game against the Catalan Dragons next up.
