Wakefield seal comfortable victory at Magic Weekend over Giants

Huddersfield Giants’ five game unbeaten run at Magic Weekend was finally ended as they were undone by Wakefield Trinity 32-18 at St James Park on Sunday.

Two quick tries and a penalty following Will Pryce’s early try turned the game around for Wakefield Trinity at half time to 14-6.

A dominant second half display sealed a fourth victory in the last five for Trinity’s interim coach Willie Poaching.

Giants did get off to a flyer when a quick break led by Olly Ashall-Bott provided Pryce space to run in and open the scoring for Huddersfield. Pryce converted the kick to give his side the advantage after two minutes.

However, two quick tries from first Tom Johnstone and second from Ryan Hampshire swung the game in favour of Trinity.

A well worked move left Johnstone with a clear run to the line and he scored in the corner before Jacob Miller’s kick caused all sorts of problems for the Giants defence, and Hampshire was able to score over the line. Mason Lino converted both kicks to give Trinity the lead.

Lino was on kicking duties again when he converted a penalty in front of the posts to add the extra two for Trinity.

Huddersfield seemed to be crumbling and things got worse Sam Hewitt was sin-binned early in the second half after striking the Wakefield man with his forearm.

Three minutes later Wakefield increased their lead when Kelepi Tanginoa proved to strong for Ashall-Bott and Pryce and crashed over the line. Lino, who was having a superb game, again added the extra two.

It could of been two tries in the space of a couple of minutes again for Trinity but a knock-on in the build-up saw Liam Kershaw’s try chalked off.

Giants needed a response and after Pryce’s kick on the last tackle, Sam Wood won the contest for the ball and bundled the ball over the line. Pryce converted to give Huddersfield hope.

Reece Lyne looked to all but bury that hope when Lino set him up for Wakefield’s fourth try of the game. Lino’s successful conversion gave Trinity a 26-12 lead with 13 minutes to play.

Giants weren’t finished there and after having an earlier try chalked-off, Josh Jones bundled over to reduce the points difference.

But with five minutes to go, a sweeping move found Chris Green who went in under the posts to cap his 150th Super League appearance with a try and to seal a comfortable victory at St James’ Park for Wakefield Trinity.
