Salford Red Devils forward Greg Burke has said he is honoured to have been made captain ahead of their Magic Weekend clash with Castleford Tigers on Saturday.

The Red Devils have started to pick up form recently including a 42-14 win over Hull FC. Leadership in Richard Marshall’s side has been a struggle this year with Lee Mossop retiring on medical grounds having previously captained the side in a Challenge Cup and Super League grand final.

Salford forward Greg Burke spoke about what it means to be a captain and what a massive honour it is to accept the role.

“It’s a massive honour as we have really struggled with big injuries.

“It’s an honour to be seen as a leader and I was more than happy to accept being captain, it’s a privilege to be honest.

“There are still some games where I feel that as a collective we haven’t put our front foot forward and let ourselves down a bit.

“However, over the season after coming back from the injury, I wanted to jump in and stay in the side which was my main goal.

“I’ve been a bit behind in terms of pre-season and I have set out and achieved that goal. These last few games are about building again and working towards next year.”

Magic Weekend is a highlight of the Rugby League calendar and is an event that has produced memories for fans over the years, however for Burke, it holds a personal memory and one that he will remember for years to come.

“It’s a highlight to be playing at Magic, it’s a big occasion, it’s not quite a final. Two years ago, it was held at Anfield and my grandad was a Liverpool supporter so to run out there was massive,” added Burke.

“If people have personal feelings towards the event then it’s massive for them so hopefully we can put in a performance as big as the event.”
