Nathan Broadhead joins Sunderland on loan from Everton

Everton forward Nathan Broadhead has joined Sunderland on loan until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old, who can play both up front or on the wing, links up with the Black Cats ahead of their trip to his former side Burton Albion on Tuesday night.

Broadhead is yet to start for Everton but has made two substitute appearances, four years apart, although both saw him play fewer than 10 minutes.

The Welsh forward’s senior experience so far has almost exclusively come during a loan spell at Burton Albion in 2019/20 where he made 22 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists. He also played mainly on the wing during that spell despite being considered more of a striker for Everton at under-23 level.

In Premier League 2, Broadhead has had a relatively impressive record of 17 goals and seven assists in 59 appearances. The goal-scoring is high for a player who has often played on the wing, although his assist tally could perhaps do with improvement.

The forward faces tough competition to break into Sunderland’s side. On the left-wing, where he has played most, he would be competing with Sunderland talisman Aiden McGeady, while upfront Ross Stewart has made a bright start to the season with two goals in two games.

At the age of 23 and having just recently signed a new two-year deal at Everton, they must rate him highly enough to think he either has a future at the club or has a sell-on potential, suggesting he has what it takes to fight for a starting berth in the Sunderland side.

Broadhead is the third loan signing to arrive on Wearside this season after the arrivals of Dennis Cirkin and Callum Doyle, meaning for now at least there is no competition between loanees for a space in the squad with five permitted in any one matchday.
