Wigan Athletic aim for another victory to complete perfect week as the Latics face Crewe Alexandra at the DW Stadium

Following an enormous moment off the pitch, after the club was taken over by the Bahraini-led group Phoenix 2021 Limited, Wigan can add to supporters joy by making it three victories on the spin by beating Crewe this weekend.

A 4-1 success over Doncaster Rovers last Saturday was followed by a stunning 2-1 victory over promotion-chasing Sunderland as Wigan climbed out of the relegation zone.

With only five games to go, it was an ideal time to get out of the dreaded bottom four and Saturday offers the chance for Leam Richardson to steer his side further clear of trouble. A win could potentially see the Latics up to 19th in the table as the season enters a decisive stretch.

Confidence in the camp is sure to be sky-high following the two wins and more importantly, getting the off-field issues sorted and securing the club’s long term future. Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi will have been aware of the possibility when buying the club so it’s fair to assume it wasn’t a major concern for the businessman and his plans for the club.

That being said, he will surely be much happier if the club remains in League One and it will enable him to re-establish the club at a much quicker pace.

Richardson will be glad to have top scorer Callum Lang back after injury and the 22-year-old scored the winner in Tuesday’s win over Sunderland.

Chris Merrie is a possibility for the weekend after being able to train during the week while Kyle Joseph, Tom Pearce, Gavin Massey and Scott Wooton continue their road to recovery.

Crewe come into Saturday’s clash in some inconsistent form with two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five games.

David Artell’s side did well to bounce back from last Saturday’s 6-0 thumping at home to Oxford by holding play-off hopefuls Portsmouth to a scoreless draw on Tuesday.

It’s been a very respectable first season back in League One for Artell’s men and they will be aiming for a top-half finish and ending the season on a high. A win against Wigan could see them climb as high as 11th.

A strong finish to the season will show that Alex are heading in the right direction and could prove helpful when it comes to recruitment in the summer.

Ryan Wintle may return after missing the previous two games with injury. Josh Lundstram and Oliver Finney remain on the sidelines.

You have to go back to last June to find the last time that Wigan won three games in a row. That season ended in relegation, albeit in controversial circumstances. They’ll be hoping to add to their winning run on Saturday and ensure there’s no repeat this time around.
