Danny Wright’s late strike was enough for Torquay to gain all three points at Plainmoor on Good Friday.

The striker who was playing his first game since Boxing Day following surgery on a hamstring injury was introduced into the fray in the second half and bagged the only goal of a game that failed to live up to expectations.

Cards manager Alan Dowson named three players from the academy on the bench which included a side with a few key players not playing due to injuries. There has also been talk that Woking would have to furlough some players after the Cards exit in the FA Trophy at the hands of Hereford United at the semi-final stage last weekend.

The Gulls created the first early chance of the match when Scott Boden held of Moussa Diarra before sending a shot just wide of the net.

Mark Smith in the visitors goal was kept busy during the early exchanges and was alert to save from Asa Hall’s shot and a Ryan Law’s cross from under the bar Smith’s outstretched hands was enough to claw the ball away for a corner.

Woking had to wait until the 25th minute before getting a shot on target through Max Kretzschmar’s long range effort which was gathered by Lucas Covolan.

In a second half played in similar vein which had few chances like the opening half a Kretzschmar free kick was seen late by Covolan with the Gulls stopper pushing the ball away for a corner.

With the game looking likely to end in a goalless draw up popped Wright to bag the winner. A cross to the near post was flicked past Smith for Wright’s ninth goal of the season to ensure three points for the hosts and keep them five points behind leaders Sutton United.
