Stevenage continue their remarkable run of form as they win on the road at Oldham

Stevenage extended their unbeaten run to 11 league games with a 1-0 victory against Oldham Athletic on Good Friday, as the Boro registered their third consecutive win and continued to impress in the League Two.

On a rare warm day at Boundary Park with the sun beating down on the hallowed turf, it was the perfect set-up for some Good Friday football.

Stevenage started the brightest and had an opening inside just five minutes, a misplaced pass from Oldham defender Harry Clarke gifted opposition striker Luke Norris with a good chance, however the striker couldn’t convert as Laurie Walker did well to push the ball away and out for a Stevenage corner.

Minutes later, the Boro came within a whisker of taking the lead. Chris Lines was given the responsibility of a free-kick from 20 yards out, the midfielder struck it well but his effort brushed the post and unfortunately hit the side netting.

As the half went on it became apparent that Oldham were failing to adapt to the high press of Stevenage. Often at times, struggling to get out of their own half, they found it really difficult to get a foothold in the match.

In the 24th minute, the visitors took a deserved lead through club captain Scott Cuthbert. After a wonderful corner delivery by Ben Coker, it was Cuthbert who met the cross and looped a header into the top corner putting his side ahead.

Elliott List had chances to extend Stevenage’s lead before the break but a mixture of some last ditch defending and good goalkeeping ensured the score remained at 1-0 as the first-half drew to a close.

The second-half began in a different vain, Oldham came out looking revitalised as manager Keith Curle aimed to secure just his second win in seven attempts as Latics boss.

Just ten minutes into the second-half, the hosts were presented with their first golden opportunity. It fell to Kyle Jameson, however, the defender headed over from just six yards out.

This was to be the story of the second-half.

Just five minutes later, the Latics looked to draw level as this time it was Ben Garrity’s turn to squander his chance. The midfielder lashed his shot well over the bar from close range.

Stevenage boss Alex Revell could see his side under pressure and decided to change formation opting for five at the back as he subbed on Joe Martin to replace Elliot Osborne.

In the 70th minute it looked like this game would eventually be put out of reach for Oldham as Kyle Jameson brought down Arthur Reed and Stevenage were awarded a penalty.

Luke Norris stepped up but Laurie Walker was equal to it as he produced an excellent save to his right palming it away to safety, keeping his side firmly in the game.

Minutes later, Stevenage manager Alex Revell, who, not for the first time during the afternoon, vented his frustration towards the referee Ben Toner and was consequently shown a yellow card.

As the game entered the dying embers, Oldham were gifted with one final opportunity to equalise as the ball fell to Davis Keillor-Dunn in the six-yard box.

However once again due to some heroic defending, the shot was blocked ensuring all three points went back to Hertfordshire.

Alex Revell guided his side to a third straight win and extended their unbeaten run to 11 games. Considering where the Boro were just a few months ago, looking destined for League Two relegation, it is an incredible turn around which deserves the highest of praise
