Managerless Northampton Town lose to bottom of the table Burton Albion

Northampton Town, without a manager, have lost 2-0 to bottom of the league Burton Albion thanks to goals from Michael Bostwick and Ryan Edwards.

The Cobblers sacked manager Keith Curle on Thursday morning after another 2-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic in midweek. U18 academy coach Jon Brady is the caretaker until Northampton Town find a new manger. The results are unchanged, however, as The Cobblers have fallen deeper into the bottom four.

Northampton started the game quickly. They nearly had the dream start when Lloyd Jones thought he had scored from a free kick, but he was deemed marginally offside. The home side then had a few chances after that, midfielder Ryan Watson hit the crossbar with a fine strike from just on the edge of the box after just six minutes.

The visitors also had a few chances in the first half. Josh Parker’s free-kick just hit the outside of  the woodwork before Lucas Akins had an effort that went wide.

Burton Albion had took control of the game in the second half. The only real clear cut chance the Cobblers had was a header from forward Danny Rose which forced goalkeeper Ben Garratt into a save early in the second half.

Northampton goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell unwisely picked up a back pass in the 77th minute from one of his defenders. From the resulting indirect free kick, defender Bostwick slotted the ball in the bottom corner from Sean Clare’s lay-off to give Burton a deserved lead.

The second goal to seal the three points for The Brewers came from midfielder Edwards in the last minute of four minutes added on. Edwards picked up the ball from a resulting Cobblers free kick in his own half. He continued his run unopposed and scored into the goalkeeper’s bottom right.

This result has major repercussions for both teams. For Northampton, this puts them in them 23rd place in the league, just two points above Burton themselves. The Cobblers are still without a win in the league since the 29th December, that is a spell of seven matches.

A new manger at the helm for Northampton is desperately needed if they are to stay in League One. For the visitors, this is their second win a row to keep their survival push alive.

The next game for The Cobblers is an away fixture on Tuesday against play-off hopefuls Ipswich Town. For The Brewers, they too face play-off hopefuls in Sunderland next weekend.
